We all enjoy those sweet treats that come with Halloween and the holiday season. Once in a while, a little dose of sugar can be calming and comforting. Consumed on a regular basis, however, and sugar can have a very negative effect on the skin, due to the inflammation sugar causes in the body.
Yes, eating sugar causes an inflammatory response that causes the body’s natural levels of insulin to spike up. Over time, this response can cause the little blood vessels in the skin to dilate, bringing on a red, discolored look. Ongoing inflammation also breaks down the natural elastin and collagen in the skin, which can cause the skin to sag prematurely. A steady diet of heavy sugar can also cause chronic acne. Ouch! None of this is good news, which is why a diet of fresh fruit and vegetables is what is prescribed for healthy looking, youthful skin and a healthy body.
A Daily Dose of Sugar?
The other tough news about steady sugar intake is that over time, too much sugar can cause an insulin resistance. Among other problems, this can lead to unattractive dark patches in the folds of the skin and unwanted hair growth.
Combatting The Sugar Blues
To really beat the sugar blues, try to replace refined sugar with fresh fruits and vegetables. Also take note of the hidden sugar in your diet. like sugar added to ketchup and even salad dressings and soups.
Also, get regular skin treatments to keep the skin looking fresh and rejuvenated. If your skin is looking dull, coarse, or inflamed, schedule an appointment today for skin treatment at one of our fine Austin Day Spas.

What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmenation is a common skin condition that involves patches of skin becoming darker in color than the surrounding skin. This skin darkening happens when there is an excess of melanin. Melanin is the brown pigment which produces skin color. People of all skin color can be affected by hyperpigmentation.
Age spots are a very common form of hyperpigmentation. These generally occur due to excess sun exposure and are also referred to as solar lentigines. Liver spots (age spots) are dark patches of skin which are usually found on the face or hands. Freckles and other areas of darkened skin usually become even darker when exposed to sunlight. This occurs because melanin in the skin absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet rays in an attempt to protect the skin.
Treatment and Prevention
Protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure is key in prevention of hyperpigmentation. It is crucial to always wear sunscreen even if it's cloudy since harmful ultraviolet rays can still pass through the cloud cover. In addition, there are topical creams that actually bleach the skin. These creams contain hydroquinone and work by fading skin discolorations back to their original color. Keep in mind that hydroquinone can be irritating to sensitive skin, and it may take up to three to six months to see improvement.
More recently, laser treatment has been implemented to help lighten or eliminate hyperpigmentation. Ruby or Q-switch lasers are highly effective in reducing the appearance of hyperpigmented skin. Fraxel lasering also works well and has little to no downtime since it's performed in a series of evenly-spaced treatments over time.
The first step to correcting any skin problem is consultation with trained medical professional. The highly qualified staff at NAAVA Salon & Spa is waiting to help you achieve you aesthetic goals. Together with you, we will create a skincare treatment plan that will enhance your natural beauty. Call our Austin Day Spa at 512-813-1000 to schedule an appointment.

When To Throw Out Your Products
Cosmetics don't last forever, so take a minute to go through your makeup bag and get rid of the things that have been hanging around for a little too long. If there is no expiration date, a good rule of thumb is to toss it if it smells bad, looks clumpy or feels sticky. Once you've tossed and replaced the old products in your makeup drawer, follow these guidelines to know how long to keep your new cosmetics.
Mascara
Mascara has a shelf life of about 4 months. After that, it's a perfect breeding ground for bacteria that could lead to eye infections.
Eyeliner
The lifespan of your eyeliner depends on the type you use. Liquid eyeliner is a perfect home for microbes and should only be kept for one year after opening. Pencil liners have a longer shelf life since you get a fresh, clean surface every time you sharpen them. Keep these for 2 years.
Eyeshadow
Powder eyeshadow has a long life and can be kept around for up to three years. Keep a close eye on creamy blends, however, as these are past their useful life when they get chalky or dry, and this may take less than three years.
Lipstick
Lipstick and lip gloss will last between one and two years. Rich, dark colors last longer as do dryer formulas. To increase the life of your lipsticks, store them in a cool dry place where they will be protected from light. In other words, not your bathroom.
Skin Enhancers
Concealers, foundations and blemish balms have varying shelf lives depending on their ingredients but typically last between two and four years. Powders last longer than liquids and creams, which should definitely be disposed of closer to the two year mark than the four year one.

How To Blow Dry Your Hair Like A Pro
When you're in a pinch and have to prep for a big evening out—without the help of a stylist—it helps to keep in mind some expert tips for perfecting your blowout. Of course, much of the success of your blowout will depend on what goals you're trying to achieve with your hair. Here are some universal tips for creating a bombastic blowout.
Think of Your Hair Like Clay
It may sound strange at first, but it's very true. You are trying to mould your hair into a certain shape, and when it is wet, it is like clay. This is why you want to pre-dry your hair with the heat on medium, so that you're removing the moisture but not necessarily setting a style just yet.
Use the Right Tools
Your blowdryer, nozzle, hair styling products and brushes are your fiercest allies in the fight against frizz. By using a blowdryer that has a wattage of at least 1800, you give yourself an immediate advantage. The trick is to start working with your hair as soon as you exit the shower. Start putting product on it while it's still wet. Those with curly hair may want to use a detangling formula, while those who want some more volume may apply a bit of mousse. After you've completed your pre-dry on the medium setting, now it's time to turn up the heat.
Aim at the Roots
Get those roots dry first, preferably using a paddle brush to help the hot air achieve its purpose of smoothing out that mane. After you feel that your hair is sufficiently dry—and you've achieved a style that you like—it's time to remember the clay lesson and blast your hair with some cool air, setting the style so that it stays for the evening. Set the look with some hairspray and then head out for the night, knowing that your hair now looks as good as you can possibly make it look.
If you're looking for some extra pizzazz or really want to impress a date, then call our Austin Hair Salon for a glamorous blowout.

Get Ready for Fall: Skincare Tips for the New Season
During season changes, skincare has to change as well. What worked to keep skin moist and healthy in the summer will not do the trick once the weather becomes colder and drier. The skin, hair and nails tend to dry out, and the changing season also requires changing personal care scents and colors.
First, because skin can quickly become dry, fall is the perfect time to cut soap out of a shower regimen. Instead, you should choose cream cleansers. Additionally, highly scented shower gels can be very drying because of the added fragrance.
Second, you must moisturize after a shower. Light lotions are good for the summer, but the skin needs a heavy barrier against moisture loss in the winter. Opt for heavier creams or oil-based moisturizers with cocoa butter, shea butter or argan oil.
Third, Fall is the time to change colors and scents over to something darker than that which was used in the summer. Floral and fruit scents are great during the summer; musky, woodsy scents are perfect for fall. In addition, while pastel nail polish is light and dainty enough for summer, dark reds, purples and grays are in for fall.
Finally, remember that the sun does not leave just because summer warmth is gone. It is vital to continue to use sunscreen over the body as well as on the face throughout the fall and winter. SPF 15 is a great start although some with very fair skin may prefer SPF 30. Moisturizing is key for fall. A skincare or spa professional can help individuals analyze their skin to determine the fall regimen that will be perfect for them. Those looking for a time of relaxation at a day spa in Austin should call NAAVA Salon & Spa to book an appointment.

How to Keep Nails Healthy Between Salon Visits
Nails can tell a great deal about a person's overall health, but even an otherwise healthy person can be beset with nails that split, are brittle, too thin or too thick. This is often because the nails have been exposed to harsh chemicals, water and even too much sunlight. Here are some tips to keep nails healthy between those visits to the nail salon:
Keep Them Covered
Use gloves when washing the dishes to protect them from the cleansers and the hot water. Gloves should also be used when cleaning in general. Ideally, they should be made of rubber with a cotton lining. Use gardening gloves when working in the garden.
Trim Nails Straight Across
As a cook would use a very sharp knife for cutting, sharp nail trimmers should be use for nails. After they are trimmed, then the tips can be curved, but with gentleness.
Keep Nails Dry
Wet fingernails encourage the growth of bacteria and put nails at risk for splitting. Again, rubber gloves should be used when performing wet work.
Moisturize
When moisturizing the hands, don't forget to moisturize the nails. Remember to rub moisturizer into the cuticles as well.
Leave Cuticles Alone
Cuticles should not be cut or pushed back. They can be injured, and if they are injured, the nail bed can become infected.
Don't Use Nail Hardeners
Nail hardeners are not regulated and so are risky to use. Instead of making the nails harder, some can actually make them thin and brittle.
Take Biotin
Biotin is a B-complex vitamin that makes nails strong and prevents them from splitting and chipping. Since biotin supplements are best taken at prescription strength to have the best effect, a person should consult with their doctor before taking them.
For the prettiest and strongest nails, schedule and appointment at our Austin salon for nail care that is professional, gentle and hygienic.

Is Massage Safe During Pregnancy?
Massage therapy is known to have great physical and psychological benefits to humans, but expectant women may wonder whether it is right during this special time in their lives. A massage can be as beneficial to a pregnant woman as to anyone else, but certain rules should be followed to assure that the procedure is safe and effective.
A prenatal massage can be particularly useful by the way it reduces the stress and soreness that often accompany the physical changes taking place during a pregnancy. However, it is not advisable in cases of high-risk pregnancies, and expectant women may have trouble finding a massage therapist willing to treat them during the first trimester.
Although the risks posed by the procedure are no greater at that time, therapists may want to avoid any potential responsibility or legal liability when considering that the rate of miscarriage is higher earlier in the pregnancy. Expectant women should also avoid aromatherapy, which uses the scent of plants or other natural products, not due to any particular risk but because human senses are often heightened during pregnancies.
Women who are expecting a child should never lie on their backs due to the risk of increased blood pressure that itself can result from blood vessel compression. When undergoing massage therapy, these women will be asked to turn onto one side or may be placed on a special table designed to accommodate their enlarged bellies. Additionally, the massage therapist should be experienced and certified in the specific area of prenatal massage.
As an expectant woman should always consult with her physician before considering any type of massage. Under the right circumstances, a prenatal massage can be almost as much of a blessing as the pregnancy itself. If you are looking for an Austin spa where you can relax with a prenatal massage, contact NAAVA Salon & Spa to schedule an appointment.

What Type of Skin Do You Have?
Not sure what category your skin falls under? This can be figured out with some slight detective work. First, wash your face. Wait a few hours and take a closer look.
Oily
Does your skin appear shiny? Is oil transferred when blotted with a tissue? Oily skin is easily identifiable due to the obvious presence of oil on the skin. Oily skin is prone to breakouts, and makeup wears off in a few hours.
Dry/Sensitive
Is your skin dry and flaky, or red and irritated? This is the dry/sensitive skin type. It needs to be hydrated, and treated delicately to avoid irritation. When using new products, be sure to patch test.
Combination
Do different parts of your face have different issues? Are your cheeks dry while your T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin) appear shiny? This type of skin may need different products on different areas of the face. Skin can be both oily and dry, or oily and normal. Like oily skin, combination skin also has the tendency to breakout from an overabundance of oil production.
Normal
The main attribute of normal skin is the lack of issues. Normal skin isn’t dry, oily, or prone to breakouts. This doesn’t mean it is always perfect. A normal complexion is even, moisturized, clear, and problems are rare.
Now What?
The first step in achieving perfect skin is recognizing what type it is. From there, it is easier to choose products that deal with particular issues. Not sure where to start? Schedule an appointment at NAAVA Salon & Spa, where our skincare professionals can offer services tailored toward your specific skin type.

Tips For Before and After Waxing
When it comes to hair removal services, waxing tends to be one of the most common methods. Waxing, when compared to shaving, lasts longer and requires less products. You can go from two to six weeks without having to worry about hair removal, whereas with shaving, you're only looking at 1 to 2 days.
If you're considering booking an Austin Waxing appointment, you may want to consider the following tips.
Prior to Your Waxing Appointment
Before even thinking of making a hair removal appointment, you'll want to take a look at the medications that you're currently taking. Any medicines containing Retin-A and/or Glycolic Acid should be avoided for 2 or more days prior (and after) your appointment. These medicines may cause irritation and could even potentially remove a dermal layer.
Once you've stopped taking any of the above medications, you'll want to make sure that the hair is primed for waxing. For best results, your hair should be at least 1/4 inch long. If it's any shorter, you'll run the risk of an incomplete wax as the hairs cannot be picked up. If the hair is any longer, it will make the process more painful. Let the hair grow out if it's too short, and if it's too long, give it a quick trim.
At least one day before your Austin Waxing appointment, you'll want to exfoliate well. You can use a loofah or a pumice stone. Just rub the area in light circles. Alternatively, you can use an all-natural scrub made with sugar and coconut oil. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and will also raise the hairs, making them easier to remove.
On the day of your appointment, at least 30 minutes before your session, you'll want to take a pain reliever. This is especially important if your pain tolerance is low. This will reduce the amount of pain experienced both during and after your waxing.
After Your Waxing Appointment
Once the pain has lessened and the area has had a chance to be soothed (typically within 24 hours), you'll want to exfoliate again. Not only does this remove any additional dead skin cells, but it also prevents the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
After you've exfoliated, be sure to moisturize—but stay away from harsh chemicals! Use natural oils or gels such as coconut oil or aloe vera to cool your skin and reduce inflammation and pain.
Try not to exercise or participate in any activities that make you sweat at least 48 hours after your hair removal appointment. Because the pores are still open, the sweat can cause bacteria to enter the pores, leading to infections and irritation.
Finally, you'll want to avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, and any form of high heat. Your skin is more sensitive immediately after waxing and heat can cause irritation. If you need to shower, take a luke-warm or cool shower for additional soothing.
Extra Tip: If you're a woman, don't book an appointment when you're on your period or about to start your period. It's best to set an appointment a week or two after your cycle is complete. Because you tend to be more sensitive during this time, you may find the pain to be unbearable.

Benefits of a Keratin Hair Treatment
In the past few years, a newly developed salon technology has taken root across the country. More and more women are opting for a keratin hair treatment, a special treatment that smooths and straightens hair, creating a frizz-free look that can last several months. Here is everything you need to know about this latest hair miracle.
What is a Keratin Treatment?
A keratin treatment is a chemical treatment that helps smooth or straighten hair. It can be used on all types of hair, from curly to straight, to help smooth frizz and give your hair a sleeker look. Keratin treatments vary in strength; however, results last for at least two months with most treatments, and they can last up to three months.
How Does it Work?
During a keratin treatment, a stylist applies a protein called keratin to your hair and seals it in with heat from a blow dryer and straightening iron. Keratin is a protein that is in your hair naturally; this treatment simply adds more keratin to the outer layers of your hair, sealing the cuticle to help smooth hair and prevent frizz. The process can take anywhere from one to two hours depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
What are the Benefits of a Keratin Treatment?
Most women who choose a keratin treatment are seeking straighter, sleeker, healthier-looking, and frizz-free hair. Keratin treatments usually offer all of these benefits. Even when faced with high humidity or light rain, hair that has been treated with keratin typically remains smooth and frizz-free.
Another benefit is that, after a keratin treatment, you won’t need to spend as much time styling your hair each day. Instead of spending 30 minutes or more blow drying and straightening your hair each morning, you could spend as little as five minutes blow drying before heading out with the perfect style.
If smooth, frizz-free hair sounds great to you, schedule an appointment for an Austin keratin hair treatment with NAAVA Salon & Spa today.

What Is a Hydrafacial?
We all want to feel comfortable and confident in the skin we're in. However, there are numerous conditions that can cause us to feel less than our best. Whether you suffer from acne, oily skin, or some other common malady, there's a treatment option that's quickly beginning to gain momentum. Austin hydrafacial treatments can provide the results you're looking for in a quick and easy half-hour visit to the spa.
What is a Hydrafacial?
Unlike traditional skin care methods such as exfoliation that leave the skin red and irritated for several hours, the hydrafacial is a method that is equally aggressive without the aggression. Using a tried and tested four step formula, you are on your way to the beautiful skin you've always dreamed of.
The Simple Four Step System
The hydrafacial can be completed in a spa, and it only takes around 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish. While there, you will undergo the following four steps:
1. Cleansing and exfoliation using a deplaning tool that eliminates makeup and dead skin cells
2. Application of a gentle glycolic/salicylic acid
3. Extraction using a a vortex-extraction nozzle that in essence "vacuums" up the debris in your skin, allowing you to see what was lurking in your pores
4. Application of an antioxidant-and-collagen-rich serum into the skin that promotes elasticity and hydration
Just a Phone Call Away
You only have one life to live, and you should do so with confidence. Beneath every skin problem is a youthful, flawless complexion, and the staff here at NAAVA Salon & Spa has the tools and knowledge to provide you with a professional Austin hydrafacial that can give you the boost you've been looking for.

Eyes That Wow: Eyelash Extensions FAQs
Women who are considering eyelash extensions typically have several questions:
1. What Are the Benefits of Eyelash Extensions?
Eyelash extensions can make women appear both younger and more approachable by highlighting the color of their eyes. Extensions can brighten and draw out browns, blues, and greens. Women with eyelash extensions elicit more eye contact and are spared the time and frustration required to deal with mascara and eyelash curlers.
2. How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?
Once applied, extensions can last as long as two months, and you can have them refreshed regularly to maintain them perpetually.
3. What Type of Extensions Are There?
There are three primary types of extensions. Synthetic silk extensions are the heaviest and produce a particularly full look, whereas Mink is softer and thinner. The thinnest type of extension available is Sable.
Many women who are aiming for a more natural look opt for mink, which also tends to be a durable choice. Sable is best used by those who have particularly thin natural lashes. Synthetic silk lashes have the advantage of being less expensive than either mink or sable. However, they tend to be less comfortable for everyday wear, and so they are more often favored for special occasions.
Because the inexperienced application of eyelash extensions can potentially damage your natural lashes, it's important to receive this service from a trained professional. At Naava Salon & Spa, getting eyelash extensions is a painless and relaxing experience. We offer a wide range of lash and brow services in addition to our menu of spa, massage, nail, and waxing services to leave you looking and feeling beautiful. If you're ready to wow the world with eyelash extensions in Austin, be sure to schedule an appointment soon.

Take It All Off: Chemical Peels
What Is A Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel works by removing a thin top layer of skin, which loosens that which holds skin together. When this process takes place, the face looks more clear and without bothersome blemishes. Peels work best with minor blemishes that are bothering you; such as scars, pimple scars, and small scratches. Chemical peels leave your face its normal color, unlike other peels that can leave an unsightly red tinge. Some people may feel a slight tingling or stinging sensation after a peel, that will subside after a small amount of time though. How Often and Aftercare
Every 4 weeks you can get a chemical peel. You need to be sure that after every peel, you are applying sunscreen. Skin is at its most beautiful after a peel, and extra protection from the sun is needed to maintain that beautiful look! SPF 30 or above is recommended for sunscreen strength. The Naava Salon & Spa Difference

How to Get the Best Brows
Customizing the color of your eyebrows can have a big impact on your style for a low cost. With just a subtle change to your eyebrow color, you can completely change your look with a low-maintenance beauty service.
Eyebrow tinting takes a very small amount of time, with most procedures taking anywhere from 30 seconds to five minutes, depending on hair and color. The procedure is painless and easy and tinting lasts from four to six weeks. After the procedure, the color will fade gradually over time, so you don't have to worry about any regrowth.
Almost any woman can benefit from eyebrow tinting. For those who color their hair, eyebrow tinting is an easy way to match your eyebrow color to hair dye. The procedure can dramatically change the look of your face. It can add color for fair-haired women or lighten eyebrows for women with larger, defined eyebrows. The procedure also leaves brows looking glossy and shiny without cosmetics.
Eyebrow tinting is also ideal for busy women with little time to maintain their style. Eyebrow pencils are generally not necessary with eyebrow tinting, and the procedure is especially effective for those with very fine or light colored eyebrows because it is a simple way to add extra color to the eyebrows.
