When To Throw Out Your Products

Cosmetics don't last forever, so take a minute to go through your makeup bag and get rid of the things that have been hanging around for a little too long. If there is no expiration date, a good rule of thumb is to toss it if it smells bad, looks clumpy or feels sticky. Once you've tossed and replaced the old products in your makeup drawer, follow these guidelines to know how long to keep your new cosmetics.

Mascara
Mascara has a shelf life of about 4 months. After that, it's a perfect breeding ground for bacteria that could lead to eye infections.

Eyeliner
The lifespan of your eyeliner depends on the type you use. Liquid eyeliner is a perfect home for microbes and should only be kept for one year after opening. Pencil liners have a longer shelf life since you get a fresh, clean surface every time you sharpen them. Keep these for 2 years.

Eyeshadow
Powder eyeshadow has a long life and can be kept around for up to three years. Keep a close eye on creamy blends, however, as these are past their useful life when they get chalky or dry, and this may take less than three years.

Lipstick
Lipstick and lip gloss will last between one and two years. Rich, dark colors last longer as do dryer formulas. To increase the life of your lipsticks, store them in a cool dry place where they will be protected from light. In other words, not your bathroom.

Skin Enhancers
Concealers, foundations and blemish balms have varying shelf lives depending on their ingredients but typically last between two and four years. Powders last longer than liquids and creams, which should definitely be disposed of closer to the two year mark than the four year one.
